  Awards and Mentorship Scheme

The Awards and Mentorship Scheme is a flagship programme of the Forbes Burnham Foundation. The Scheme targets students from Grades 7 – 10, and their parents. Mentees are exposed to activities that will enhance their academic, psychosocial, and personal development. Additionally, mentees benefit from their annual participation in educational tours, camps, and medical and dental checkups.  The Scheme also provides support to parents of mentees, by engaging them in various activities aimed at enhancing their ability to effectively guide/support their charges, and to make the best decisions for their children.

Mentees are selected from organisations that Forbes Burnham was associated with.  This selection is done annually after the results of the Grade 6 examinations are announced.  An induction ceremony is held to welcome the new batch to the Scheme and each new Mentee is given an educational package to help prepare for the new school term.  The Mentees meet at least once per month in batches.  The Mentorship Scheme Board would invite professionals, academics and experts to share their knowledge and experience with Mentees and their parents.

The Awards and Mentorship Scheme is managed by a Directorate which includes parents of Mentees.  The Members of the current Board are:

What to expect?

Commencing secondary education is a significant milestone in the life of an individual. This transition comes with many expectations, some of which new students may not be prepared for. Listed below are some expectations of your years during secondary school.

Making new friends  - At your new school, you will encounter students, who attended different primary schools. You will therefore make new friends. When forming a new friendship, remember the following:

  • Choose your friends wisely

  • Share your values with your new friend, so he/she knows what your beliefs are

  • Treat your friends the way you would like to be treated

Having more assignments  - Homework is one way of helping students to develop the habit of working independently, and learning how to conduct research to gather information.

Working in groups - Group work helps students to develop critical life skills, such as leadership, how to work as a team, and to resolve differences. You can therefore expect to be placed in groups to complete some assignments.

I Can Do It!

Reading more often– You will be spending more time reading at the secondary level, because of the volume of work and subjects you are required to do.

Studying more often, and for longer periods – In order to be successful in each subject, you have to study and review your work.

Social pressures - As a preteen/teenager, you will be pressured by your friends to become involved in various activities that have both positive, and negative effects.

Challenges - There will be many challenges during the years you will spend at your new high school. For examples, you will have additional subjects to cover in addition to many different teachers. During this period, your bodies will be changing. This process can also be challenging as well.
